Helsinki-Uusimaa Circular Hub – pioneering together for circular economy

The Helsinki-Uusimaa Circular Hub is a community with municipalities, various organisations, research institutions and experts – together we take Helsinki-Uusimaa and Finland to the international top of circular economy.

Join us in building Helsinki-Uusimaa Circular Hub

We invite everyone interested in circular economy to join us at our project workshops and on our mailing list. On the mailing list we share information on our thematic workshops (for instance on food, construction, plastics and textiles, electricity and electronics), and other ways to make an impact, and also how the projects develop and what results they bring. A sustainable future engages us all!

Circular economy is about utilizing materials efficiently and minimizing waste. It is also a strive for a smaller consumption of untouched natural resources, a shared economy and the development of services. The services should be based on sharing, renting and recycling.

The Helsinki-Uusimaa Circular Hub offers a platform for co-developing circular economy solutions, sharing best practices, networking and supporting the company implementations of circular economy thinking and competence, as well as piloting. Additionally, we take part in international circular economy networks and pilot in an EU Initiative. There are many ways to participate in the work regarding the Hub!

We build a resource-wise and carbon neutral circular economy community in Helsinki-Uusimaa Region; together we can better maintain values not tied to materials and products, also use these sustainably and financially.

Helsinki-Uusimaa as EU pilot

The Helsinki-Uusimaa Circular Hub was chosen as one of the pilot regions for the EU Circular Cities and Regions Initiative. As a CCRI Pilot Region, our regional actors in the field can get tailored guidance from experts in the assessment of developing, implementing and improving action plans, as well as for the identification of significant value chains. The other Finnish pilot region chosen is the Tampere Region, and the other regions participating from our country are Päijät-Häme and Jyväskylä. 12 regions and cities from all over Europe have been chosen as pilots.

Four key areas of circular economy form the basis of the Helsinki-Uusimaa Circular Hub: food, construction, plastics and textiles, along with electricity and electronics. New themes can be brought into the discussion, as we are indeed talking about a learning process.

The aim is to create new forms of business and increase turnovers of companies, help international businesses to grow and to intensify any cooperation with active support. A significant aspect of the Circular Hub is to strengthen the cooperation and competence in circular economy, and to get companies, municipalities and cities to utilize these more effectively.

This shared project of the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council and CLIC Innovation will be implemented during the years 2022–2024. The total budget is 647,000 euros, and the project is a receiver of our national funding for regional sustainable growth and vitality (AKKE). The development of the Hub begun with a preliminary survey made by Green Net Finland, CLIC Innovation, VTT, HSY and funded by the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council.
